Gregeration X Newsletter November 9, 2024-Star Frontiers and Beyond!

Posted on November 11, 2024March 12, 2025 by Greg Sorber

Halloween has come and gone, now the holiday season is fully upon us. Thanksgiving is bearing down on us whether we like it or not. I’m actually looking forward to it as I like this time of year. I’m not crazy like someone I know who put their Christmas tree up in October (that’s taking things a little far, LOL), but I enjoy Thanksgiving and Christmas, so bring it on!

I finally hit the wall yesterday. I completely ran out of steam. It felt like I slammed into a brick wall. To recover, I put on my pajamas and napped all day. This morning I’m feeling rejuvenated and ready to take on the world!

One thing I’ve been thinking about a lot lately is Star Frontiers, a space opera role-playing game TSR produced from 1982 to 1985. This was a fun game that I played in my early teens. As a Star Wars fan, which didn’t have a role-playing game until 1987, this filled a huge void, especially when they released their Knight Hawks space-combat expansion. Although it was an rpg, it didn’t invoke the same knee-jerk reaction that some people had to Dungeons & Dragons, so you could play it a little more openly.

I recently joined a Facebook group that is all about Star Frontiers. This has brought back a lot of fun memories. Sadly, I lost all of my original Star Frontiers materials (and a lot of other cool stuff) in a fire in 1999. I’m tempted to scour E-Bay to find and regain this fun game. Also, you gotta love the amazing cover artwork by Larry Elmore.

Do you have any fun games, role-playing or otherwise that you’re currently playing or brings back fond memories? Let me know.

  • Two weeks ago I was at San Diego Comic Fest in Carlsbad, CA. That will be my last show for 2024.
  • My focus for the rest of 2024 is on wrapping up the first draft of By Archangel’s Light, followed by editing in early 2025, with a Spring 2025 release (probably May, but earlier if I can make it happen!)
  • My next appearance will be at Pasadena Comic Con on January 26th.

  • I received confirmation yesterday that I will be exhibiting in the Small Press area of WonderCon 2025 in Anaheim, CA from March 28-30th. If you’re interested, be sure to get your tickets before they sell out.

An occupied world. A slave labor mining camp. Two captured Fleet officers. And a frontier god who could no longer stand to watch innocent lives perish.

The conflict between the Shoultain Warlords and the Federation has been going on for millennia but only through a series of skirmishes in the Neutral Zone. The latest such conflict, precipitated by traitors within the Fleet ranks, results in the capture of two young Fleet officers, Chief Medical Officer of the UGS Trevor Meridian, Karin Vexley and the ship’s second rotation navigator, Kitaya DeWynter. Their ship can’t assist them in any way, because that would constitute an outright declaration of war. Their friends and loved ones can only look on from outside the Neutral Zone, helpless in their anger and grief.

Jonah is mad—space mad!

This is a near future story about a rock hopper (asteroid prospector) based on Ceres. Jonah is partnered with Burt, a companion nobody can see, or hear. He only exists in Jonah’s mind. Of course, he is mad—space mad.

Jonah is contracted to Daedalus Corporation, and as far as they are concerned, he and his imaginary friend are untouchable. They are their golden goose with more claims that have paid out than any other ten prospectors.

While out prospecting in the asteroid belt, they discover an alien relic. Tinkering with it, Jonah manages to restore functionality to the device. And well, blowups happen.

This is a prequel side story that introduces asteroid mining and Ceres as the base of operations for the soon to be released story, Exiled From Earth.
