My Musings

I’m writing this from sunny southern California in the middle of an extended four-day weekend. With the extra days available to me, aside from my usual writing goals of writing more, editing more, and plotting more, I’m planning on accomplishing a few other tasks this weekend. The first one is to get an early start on planting my garden for the year.

I’m no master gardener, but I try to plant a few things each year. Last year I didn’t do a garden, but I planted several trees, two in the ground and several citrus trees in containers on my patio. My kumquat and calamansi trees were by far the most prolific and I’m still pulling fruit off of them. I’m hoping my lemon and lime trees do better this year.

At some point I’d like to build a hydroponics system in my garage, similar to what Misty has in the Mechhaven series, but alas, my garage is an unsightly mess that could take years to get into decent shape. Instead, last year I bought a GreenStalk planter and immediately got too busy to plant anything in it. So it has been sitting in a box helping to clutter up said garage.

A GreenStalk is a multi-tiered planter with six pockets per tier, so you can plant thirty different plants if desired. You water from the top and it trickles down through the planter to help avoid over watering. Another nice thing about the GreenStalk is it sits on a base with wheels, so you can move it into the shade on those really hot days.

Here’s a link to the website: https://greenstalkgarden.com. I’m not affiliated with GreenStalk, it just looked like a cool way to grow some food. I’ve already made progress by pulling the box out of the garage, unpacking it, and buying some potting soil. Tomorrow, I’ll tackle the assembly, filling it with soil, and planting. Once things start growing, I’ll send some updates.

All ready to go!

I’m planning on starting with some strawberries, carrots, a variety of greens, and I’ve always wanted to try growing cucamelons. If you garden, what are your favorite things to grow and what do you think I plant? Send me a message and let me know!

Mechhaven Missives

  • Edits for On Darkhaven Forged are progressing nicely. I’m on my second pass and awaiting feedback from some beta readers.
  • As I mentioned in the last newsletter, I was getting ready to meet with Jeff Brown, the cover artist for the Mechhaven series. We talked over zoom and came up with a cool concept for Book 4. Meeting with Jeff is always highly motivating and coming up with a concept for a cover is great fun. Even cooler than that, Jeff sent me an amazing first draft and after a few rounds of adjustments, he finished the cover of Book 4! I’m really excited to share it with you, but I’ll need to hold off on the cover/title reveal until we get closer to the release of On Darkhaven Forged. But I think it’s something special!
  • Plotting for Book 4 is going well. I’m about 25% through, I hope to get to around 50% this weekend. I tend to plot pretty tightly for the first part of the book and then a little looser for the latter parts. That way I have flexibility if something changes during the writing process and something always changes.
  • The ebooks for Pax Machina and Mechs and Machinations will be on sale for $0.99 next week from 02/21/2022 through 02/27/2022. I’ll send out an additional reminder once the promotion has gone live. So, if you haven’t read both books, or if you know someone who might be interested, this is a great time to pick them up.

Featured Promotion

I have a promotion from Shane Shepherd this week and a couple of group promotions. The authors in these promotions share my books with their readers, so please do what you can to help support them in return.

The Home You Don’t Remember

It’s been five years since Captain Baldwin Tavares saved part of his crew from the warmongering aliens that turned the humans’ hopeful mission into a bloodbath. Now, the spaceship TSS Cartographer has finally reached Earth… and Win and the others see what their enemy has done to their planet and their people.

Win is more than surprised at what they find and at the future awaiting them all—but he refuses to accept a future dictated by the enemy, even if they’ve been spared death. Win knows he’s not the only one and resolves to find and help those who oppose the alien regime.

But that task is not so easily accomplished, and now Win has a planet worth of enemies instead of a smaller group. When push comes to shove, how far can one man go?
